Chapter Thirteen

Tansy

Cadence is standing in front of our classroom, hand on her hip. “Took you long enough to get here.”

Cadence is the only one here. “Is everyone else already inside?”

She nods to the door where a piece of paper is taped to it. I walk closer and read the handwritten note. Class moved to courtyard.

“Makes sense, I suppose,” I say as Cadence and I start walking. “Not much room here to spar.”

My stomach twists and I feel a little nauseous. How am I supposed to pull this off?

“Regretting that hook up offer?” Cadence asks.

“No,” I say. “I’m not going to sleep with someone to make my magic stronger. That’s not a good reason to hop into someone’s bed.”

“What is a good reason?” she asks.

“You know, when you care about someone,” I say.

“You’re a hopeless romantic,” she teases.

I laugh. “I didn’t say I needed to be in love with the person, but I need to at least like them.”

“So no on Chase or Hayden,” she says.

“Agree,” I say.

“But maybe on Ethan?” she asks.

My chest tightens and I feel hot. I suppose I could see myself rolling around with Ethan. He’s sweet and sexy and probably knows his way around a woman’s body. Tingles spread low in my belly.

I don’t get a chance to answer before we catch sight of a group of students standing outside in the courtyard.

The space is usually full of cement tables with umbrellas in them. Tonight, the beautifully manicured grass lined with stone paths is empty of furniture.

It’s lit by a few floating lanterns that cast my classmates in dark shadows. If I told anyone at my old school that I was going to attend a supernatural school, I’m sure this is exactly what they’d imagine.

A group of people outside in the dark preparing to attack each other with magic.

How fucking cliche.

“Class,” Professor Torres calls as he makes his way to the center of the group. “Welcome to our first sparring event.”

I’m not watching him, though, I’m looking for Ethan. I find him on the other side of the gathered group, looking at me. He grins when I catch his eye.

Maybe the two of us will end up in bed together. Possibly soon.

I shake the thought from my head. We hardly know each other and while part of me wishes I had the confidence to be more open about sex, I’m just not that girl.

Fuck. I am a hopeless romantic.

Cadence elbows me. “Tansy,” she hisses my name.

I glance over at her and she nods toward the center of the group. Some of the students have scattered around the courtyard and the group is much smaller than it was when we started. Even Ethan is gone now. Off to spar with someone. The remaining students are silent and staring at me.

“Get over there,” Cadence whispers.

I step toward Professor Torres who is waiting for me.

“Sorry,” I say. Instead of listening, I’d been wondering about a guy. Again. What is wrong with me?

“As I was saying,” Professor Torres says, “Tansy, Val has kindly agreed to mentor you in this challenge.
